Germans are known for their penchant for getting naked in the park and on the beach, but some Munich residents are now championing cycling in the nude, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The sun burned down mercilessly on a recent Saturday morning upon a group of people gathered along Munich's Isar River. But that didn't keep the hobby cyclists from stripping down completely before hopping on their bikes and heading off for a two-day tour.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on Wednesday that the hearty nudists are part of a growing number of Germans keen to experience biking in the buff.

“Cycling naked gives you a feeling of freedom,” Alex, the 53-year-old organizer of Nacktradtouren, told the paper.

He leads regular groups from Munich into the Bavarian countryside naked as jaybirds aside from headgear and biking shoes. On his latest excursion he was even joined by a young American woman named Rebecca, who learned about the joy of nude cycling on the internet.

"You can't do this in America," she said excitedly.

While they're still in the Munich city limits the cyclists get strange looks, but local residents and the police mostly tolerate them without incident. “Only once we're further out of Munich in the small Bavarian villages will you sometimes hear a nasty word,” said Alex.

And other than sunburn, the tour participants apparently risked no bodily harm, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

“It rubs your backside even less than with clothing,” claimed one eager biker of ridding his saddle bareback.
