For the fifth consecutive year, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Berlin (HKETO Berlin) is sponsoring the Berlin City Cup in dragon boat races. The 21st City Cup will take place from 30 June to 1 July 2018 in Berlin-Grünau. More than 70 teams from all over Germany will race for victory at Berlin's biggest water sports event. Besides the active competition on the water, sport fans and families will enjoy the annual dragon boat tug of war, as well as culinary and musical highlights.
The modern dragon boat races originate from China 300 BC. The Poet Qu Yuan took his own life in the River Mi Muo because of the grievances in the country. When his supporters learned of his death, they took their boots out to the river and hit the water with their paddles to keep the corpse safe from fish. Based on this legend, the Dragon Boat Festival in Hong Kong was created in 1976. At that time, the teams consisted of Hong Kong fishermen and one boat from Japan.
Meanwhile, over 5,000 athletes in 160 local and international teams from 11 countries compete against each other at the famous Victoria Harbour during the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival. Hundreds of thousands of spectators watch the dragon boat races every summer. The 2018 edition will be held from 22 to 24 June this year. In addition to the thunderous boom of beating drums and splashing waves in the dragon boat races, the three-day festival has developed into one of the biggest parties and water sport events in the world. With marching bands, entertainers, live music and food trucks, fun-filled events such as the fancy dress competition for local and overseas teams, and an artificial sand beach for sunbathing, the festival guarantees a variety of great summer fun for visitors right in the heart of the city.
On the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, more dragon boat races will be staged in various districts in Hong Kong, including Stanley, Tai Po, Sha Tin, Tuen Mun, Sai Kung and Aberdeen. With the Dragon Boat Festival and a series of other celebrations happening in June this year, such as the East Asia Baseball Cup from 24 to 28 June and the International Handball Federation Trophy from 28 June to 2 July, it is a great time for visitors to come to Hong Kong to experience the city's vibrant culture and festive appeal.
The 2019 edition of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival is scheduled from 14 to 16 June. Interested teams from overseas, who want to participate at the dragon boat races, can apply for the category ‘international championships' which is open to overseas teams only. Entry fees will be waived. For more information how to apply for the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races in 2019 please visit www.discoverhongkong.com.
