For many people in Germany, October means Oktoberfest leftovers, autumn markets and shorter days. But for millions of Bengalis around the world, it's most closely associated with the festival of Durga Puja.
The festival honours the Hindu goddess Durga and celebrates the triumph of good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, Durga defeated the demon Mahishasura after a fierce battle, becoming a symbol of courage, protection and divine power.
In India, nowhere celebrates the festival quite like Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. For several days, the city is transformed by elaborate temporary temples known as pandals, spectacular artworks, drumming, music, food stalls and round-the-clock festivities.
In 2026, the main public celebrations fall between October 16th and October 21st.
But you don't need to fly to India to get involved.
As Germany's Indian and Bengali communities have grown, so too have Durga Puja celebrations. Today, events are held across the country, drawing not only Bengalis and Hindus but also neighbours and curious newcomers.
What can visitors expect?
Many celebrations centre on a large image of the goddess Durga, usually depicted defeating Mahishasura and accompanied by Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Kartikeya.
Over several days, priests conduct prayers and rituals while visitors gather to offer flowers, socialise and share meals.
Alongside the religious ceremonies, many German celebrations feature:
- Traditional Bengali music and drumming (dhak)
- Dance and cultural performances
- Theatre, poetry and children's programmes
- Community meals and blessed food (prasad)
- Indian food stalls and handicrafts
- Family-oriented activities and social gatherings

Do you have to be Hindu to attend?
Many of Germany's Durga Puja events are organised by cultural associations rather than temples alone and explicitly welcome visitors of all backgrounds.
That said, some individual events may require advance registration, particularly where meals are provided or venues have capacity limits. It’s always a good idea to check organisers' websites or social media pages before setting out.
Where is Durga Puja taking place in Germany in 2026?
Berlin
Berlin hosts several Durga Puja celebrations and remains one of the main centres of festivities in Germany.
One of Berlin’s longest-running celebrations is the Sarbojonin Durga Puja, organised by Namaste Berlin e.V. and taking place from October 16th to 20th at Waterloo-Ufer in Kreuzberg.
Organisers describe the event as a celebration of "devotion, tradition and togetherness" and explicitly invite visitors who are discovering Durga Puja for the first time.
Berlin is also home to celebrations organised by Berliner Bengalis e.V., a cultural association dedicated to promoting Bengali culture and Hindu traditions in the German capital.
Alongside religious observances, the group typically includes cultural performances, music, dance and community activities in its annual festivities.

Cologne
The Cologne region hosts one of Germany's most established Durga Puja celebrations.
Organised by Bharat Samiti, the festival runs from October 17th to 21st at the Bürgerzentrum in Chorweiler.
The programme includes daily prayers, flower offerings (anjali), distribution of prasad, evening worship ceremonies, cultural programmes, community meals and the traditional Dashami celebrations marking the conclusion of the festival.
Düsseldorf
The Durga Puja organised by Indische Gemeinde Düsseldorf runs from October 17th to 21st at Flinger Broich.
Visitors can expect morning puja ceremonies and flower offerings followed by evening cultural programmes, music, dance, theatre performances and family entertainment.
The organisers also host an Indian food court, handicraft stalls and skin decorating (mehendi). According to the association, the annual celebration attracts more than 1,200 visitors and is as one of the community's largest events of the year.
Bremen
Durga Puja celebrations in Bremen-Huchting take place from October 17th to 21st.
Organisers describe the event as a gathering for Indian-German families, friends and neighbours, combining devotion, culture, food and community spirit.
Like many modern celebrations in Germany, the Bremen event emphasises cultural exchange and encourages participation from people of all backgrounds.

Stuttgart
Stuttgart's Durga Puja is notable for its longevity.
Celebrated since 1995, organisers say 2026 will mark the festival's 32nd edition, making it one of the oldest Durga Puja celebrations in southern Germany.
The event traditionally attracts Bengalis from across Baden-Württemberg and neighbouring regions. Organisers explicitly welcome new guests, although visitors are generally asked to contribute towards the costs of running the celebration.
How to find Durga Puja events near you
Even if your city isn't on this list, that doesn't mean a Durga Puja celebration isn't taking place nearby. Start by running a search for "Durga Puja" and your city name to find public celebrations.
You may also want to check Facebook, local Indian or Bengali community websites, social media groups and dedicated portals such as durgapuja.eu.
Because many events are held in community centres, church halls or other rented venues, locations can change from year to year, so it's worth checking organisers' websites or social media pages for the latest details before heading out.
