What does Hitzekoller mean?
The German noun der Hitzekoller describes a heat-induced meltdown: that irritable, short-tempered state brought on by prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
It’s not a medical diagnosis like Hitzschlag (heatstroke), but rather the psychological tipping point where the heat gets the better of you.
Grammatically, Hitzekoller is a compound noun made up of die Hitze (heat) and der Koller (a fit of rage, frenzy or madness). As with all German compounds, the final part determines the gender, so the word is masculine: der Hitzekoller.
The second component, Koller, is linked to medieval medical theories connecting anger and agitation with too much yellow bile (cholera). It also appears in other German compound nouns such as Lagerkoller (the feeling of being cooped up too long, typically known as “cabin fever” in English).
Why do I need to know Hitzekoller?
In winter, you’re about as likely to need to know Hitzekoller as you are to need the word Weihnachtsbaum (Christmas tree) in June.
But right now – as temperatures creep towards record highs, apartments trap heat, offices slow to a crawl and public transport turns into a mobile sauna – it feels almost mandatory.

At first it’s just the sweat: beads forming on your forehead, gathering in every hollow and trickling relentlessly down your spine.
Then comes the mental fog, the sluggishness, the creeping irritation. The person counting coins at the supermarket feels like your sworn enemy and the squeak of a tram door is enough to make you want to scream.
This is a Hitzekoller.
Knowing this word will also help you keep up with any Pokémon fans you know. In German, Hitzekoller is the name for a powerful move known as "Overheat" in English – an attack that unleashes a huge blast of heat but leaves the user completely drained.
It’s a surprisingly perfect match – all that heat building up to a single explosive outburst, followed by the feeling of being totally wiped out.
Use it like this:
Ich kriege langsam einen Hitzekoller in dieser stickigen Wohnung.
I’m slowly having a heat meltdown in this stuffy flat.
Im überfüllten Zug hatten alle Fahrgäste einen Hitzekoller.
Everyone on the crowded train was losing their mind from the heat.
Bei dieser Affenhitze bekommt man doch sofort einen Hitzekoller.
In this extreme heat, you get a heat frenzy straight away.
Wenn es nicht bald abkühlt, kriege ich noch den totalen Hitzekoller!
If it doesn’t cool down soon, I’m going to completely lose it from the heat!
