What does Eierkontrollgriff mean?
Let’s break it down: Eier means “eggs”, Kontroll is “control” or “check”, and Griff is “grip”.
But before you start thinking about your breakfast, it’s worth noting that Eier is also well-known German slang for testicles (see also; Hoden) – much like “balls” or “nuts” in English, or "huevos" in Spanish.
Along with Eier, other German slang terms include Nüsse (nuts) and Klöten (literally, knots or lumps).
In plain terms, the Eierkontrollgriff is the testicular examination – an apparently essential part of the military medical check-up, effectively a rite of passage that many would rather skip.
Why are people talking about the Eierkontrollgriff now?
The term has been popping up all over the German press lately, and for good reason.
According to Der Spiegel, the infamous “egg check” will remain a fixture of the soon-to-be-reintroduced medical exam for new recruits, despite some medical experts questioning its usefulness.

The original purpose was to detect hernias, undescended testicles, or tumours – medical conditions that could prevent someone from serving. But recent medical guidelines suggest that routine screening isn’t particularly effective and that false positives can lead to unnecessary anxiety.
So why keep it? Some suggest it’s less about health and more about tradition – a kind of initiation ritual and a first taste of military life where personal boundaries will be invaded regularly.
With letters from the Defence Ministry set to start arriving in the mailboxes of young German men across the country next year, Eierkontrollgriff is a word – and an experience – that will likely become much more common again.
