German chancellor Friedrich Merz has come under fire for doubling down on what many see as racist remarks on diversity in cities. Rather than addressing underlying social issues, Merz risks sowing division, says Rachel Loxton.

Saying that there is no problem with the immigration policy in the last 10-15 years brought us AfD. All the solutions mentioned are great and one way or the other all parties claimed they were trying to do that. The reality a lot of people seeis that we do have an integration problem, and if ''not accepting people who do not want or cannot integrate'' is not on the table, then we will always create a space where problems occur, and AfD and racism will grow.
