At 18.45 pm the driver of a Volkswagen Passat drove along the street approaching the cafe and accelerated directly into the seating outside, according to several eyewitnesses.

He then pulled the car back out of the carnage he had caused and drove off.

The police were alerted and the man didn't get far. He was stopped within 300 meters of the scene of the crime.

Nordbayern.de reports that the driver and the three men sitting in the cafe all knew each other.

The exact motive behind the crime is still unknown. But eyewitnesses saw a confrontation between the four men shortly before the incident.

One of the three men was fighting for his life in hospital on Sunday evening, while the other two were also seriously injured.

The police have handed the case to the murder squad.
