Berlin's abandoned airport-turned-park Tempelhofer Feld was saved from developers this week when citizens voted against building flats there in Sunday's referendum.

And as Berliners' spirits were soaring, so was our German of the Week astronaut Alexander Gerst, who became the first German to launch into space in six years.

He and his international team headed up towards stars in the capsule on Wednesday, making for the International Space Station.

Speaking of stars, Los Angeles was all agog with the news that legendary German film star Marlene Dietrich's belongings were up for sale - tuxedos, jewellery and all.

More of our top pictures this week include speed demon German coach Joachim Löw who was banned for driving, nuns in the rain and exploding roads.
