This week the first group of Syrian refugees arrived in Germany, fencing champion Thomas Bach became the most powerful man in world sport and protests took place in the capital against internet surveillance.

The week began with high tensions as thousands took to the streets in Berlin to oppose internet surveillance involving the US National Security Agency (NSA) and the German government.

Relief was the overwhelming emotion on Wednesday as 107 Syrian refugees touched down in Germany having fled their country’s civil war.

German actor Otto Sander, best known for his performances in ‘Das Boot’ and ‘Wings of Desire’, sadly passed away aged 72. But on a positive note, Thomas Bach’s election as president of the International Olympic Commission was a proud moment for German sport.
