German customs officers who uncovered a Trojan elephant drug smuggling ploy turned the tables on the would-be importers and sent the package to them - only to knock on the door shortly afterwards.

The drug smugglers must have been pleased with themselves when their wooden carved elephant, with its belly stuffed with nearly a kilo of marijuana, arrived safely from Ghana after being posted via freight, to Saarbrücken.

But the Trojan elephant was hiding more than just the drugs - it was also keeping a secret. The cops had already busted it and were on their way.

“The wooden figure from Ghana about the size of a medicine ball was transported via Brussels by a courier service to Frankfurt airport,“ said a customs spokesman.

After discovering the 990 grams of marijuana inside, officials packed it back up and delivered the figure to the address marked on the outside.

An 18-year-old girl who accepted the package admitted she had known about the smuggling scam and had been forced by her boyfriend to be there to receive the drug-filled elephant.

She and her 20-year-old boyfriend were arrested.
