Merkel worries Arab violence could spread

“The persistent violence in the Arab world fills me with fear. I strongly condemn the attacks against the German embassy in Khartoum, as well as those against several American embassies," Merkel said in a statement.

"Violence must never be the means of political debate. Religious fanaticism must not take the upper hand. Germany calls for a mutual respect of all religions and a dialogue between faiths," she added.

“I call upon all parties in this difficult situation to show calm and think carefully. Arab governments must do everything to ensure security at diplomatic missions," she said.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle earlier demanded that Khartoum ensure the safety of the German mission.

"I condemn the anti-Islamic hate video but still this cannot be a justification for the outbreak of violence," Westerwelle told reporters. "This violence must stop immediately."

He expressed relief that no German staff were injured when around 5,000 protesters protesting at an anti-Islam film stormed the embassy, leaving it torched and badly damaged.

Two protesters were killed during the riot after it later spread to the US embassy.

Westerwelle later spoke to his Sudanese counterpart Ali Karti by telephone and demanded "a quick and comprehensive safeguarding of the German embassy in Khartoum," a ministry spokesman said.

Karti "assured us that his government will do everything to ensure security," the spokesman said.

“I understand the outrage in the Islamic world," Westerwelle said of the amateurish US-made film, which portrays followers of the Islamic faith as immoral and gratuitously violent.

Westerwelle insisted however that the mob that had stormed the diplomatic missions in Khartoum did not represent "the majority of citizens."

Story continues below…

He had announced earlier that Germany had stepped up security at its embassies and consulates throughout the Muslim world in the wake of the violent protests touched off by the video.

He said the Sudanese ambassador to Germany had been summoned to his ministry earlier on Friday and "unequivocally reminded of his government's duty to protect diplomatic missions."

It was not immediately clear why the German embassy came under attack, although Islamists frequently deplore the country's military role in Afghanistan.

Of course it will spread. The ignorant arab street is being whipped up for political reasons. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Iran is behind all this as a cover for its completion of the last stages of its nuclear weapons program. Its perfect really, Israel is screaming but Obama is frightened that the necessary steps will inflame the situation further thereby threatening long term commercial interests and stability in the region. Whats a poor incumbent up for re-election to do?

The liberal media can't stand to admit that Obama's soft power treatment of the Islamic world over the past nearly four years, has been a failure. Now the US is not only hated as it was under Bush, but it is no longer even feared.

As for the Islamic world itself; Muslims, and their liberal western allies, complain of "Islamophobia", but the problem is that the Islamic world is phobic against ANYTHING unIslamic, so please liberal leftists and Muslims, stop with the whining hypocrisy! In Egypt today, the revolting treatment of indigenous Coptic Christians at the hands of Muslims, including over 40 dead this year alone, should have liberals in the west shouting Christianophobia from the rooftops. But they don't. Why? Is it acceptable for the Islamic world to mistreat anyone not Islamic but when a person in the west; AKA, the non-Islamic world, makes fun of Islam, the Muslims and their western leftist apologists, demand action against that individual? What about those who raped and almost murdered Lara Logan; have those savages been arrested and placed on trial? I doubt it. Egypt's last synagogue closed down today because the Jewish community has been driven out. But you won't hear about that on the BBC or CNN, Not when such "news" organisations are too busy promoting the idea of "Islamophobia" in order to morally goad the west into destroying our freedom of speech.

Germans ned to wake up and realise that guys like Thilo Sarrazin are correct about Islam and the migration of these unassimilable third world cultures. Do you really desire a Germany that resembles the Sudan?

The person that made this video is a Coptic Christian by the name of Nakoula and has been incarcerated a few times for drugs and fraud.

To blame a Nation and its representatives shows how unstable and hyper sensitive these people are.

Of course this will spread as long as the Jihadist keep throwing gasoline on the fire.

TL must also be worried about these zombies attacking their street level head office in Berlin. I can somewhat understand that but cannot understand our governments apologising over a movie being made that is completely out of their control. For our governments to have control like that they would need a regime like the one in Syria under Assad.

So a badly made film " which portrays followers of the Islamic faith as immoral and gratuitously violent."

Is followed by followers of the Islamic faith being gratuitously violent and immorally attacking and killing innocent people.

Sad that they decided to prove the film correct.

As to spreading these zombies were on the streets of London yesterday burning flags of friends of the British people.

If an islamist hates you: "you opress my people, my culture, and my belief!" If you hate an islamist: "You are a racist!"

Quite the double standard, don't you think?

Did we in the west attack any Muslim countries Embassies when it was found out that the imam placed a defaced Koran in a christian girls bag and had her arrested? These hotheads are looking for any opportunity to attack western christian countries.

Violence is wrong. I saw the trailer and I found it stupid, however it is not correct to think that all Americans / Canadian / European are represented by it. Having said this and again repeating that violence is wrong, I must say that the way western populistic press comment on Islam is many times unfair. I live in Germany and many times I have heard bad comments about Turkish cause they r Muslim. We need to be careful here and politicians should have this within the top priorities of the agenda. Of course they do not do (until this happens) cause it is not cool and maybe unpopular for bild readers. It is more valuable to waste 2 years talking about Greece economical issue. then let's not complain...

If you wanted to make Islam look bad, what could you do that would make it look worse than kill a bunch of innocent people, because of what somebody else did. Let them keep it up they are the best advocates for not treating them like adults there are. If I was the Israeli government I would shoot as much fottage as possible and distribute it as far and wide as I could.

What normal person would want this violence and murder imported into their country? Who would want their family exposed to such people. An insult is repaid with murder, what would a psychiatrist say about that.

We should all seriously look at ideologies that use religion as a reason for violence and they should lose their recognition as a religion and tax exempt status. All Embassyies should have appropriate security and assist each other in their defence. Ambassadors are peacemakers and to kill one is an insult to God and civilization.

This past week's events are the best argument against islamic immigration europe could ever hope to have laid out before it. Unfortunately the West will commit suicide before it renounces its addiction to cheap labor.

I only hope when the drones come-the guilty aren't having breakfast with their babies. The maker of this video deserves an academy award not for the quality of his video, but the attention and hopefully all aid withdrawn from the Arab world. They played right into his hand. Since the maker is only down the road from me here in Calif, maybe i'll pay him for another video. Let see if The Local will delete another opinion different from their own. I will copy this just incase big bro deletes it and repost again and again!

The attack on the German embassy shows this has little to do with some film in America. This is anti-western demostration and wanting to build a caliphate.

You should seek out a new TV series called "Allah Islam". It's some kind of a documentary about the extreme Muslims in Europe.I was very worried if I was living in France or Sweden... but you can never know. To make thing short - They want to take over Europe and make it follow Sharia rule. Most of it is in Arabic and Hebrew, but there some English parts.

More about it -

You cannot on the one side militarily interfere in Islamic countries and on the other, pretend you want Moslems to integrate into Germany society and allow the Islamic religion to be taught in schools. When will the government wake up to the fact that democracy and Islam do not harmonise? To accept the very religions which carry out violence within their own countries is also to accept the possibility of such violence here.

The most we can hope for is peaceful co-operation and that itself is not easy, especially when there are more than enough idiots around who love causing trouble. Merkel is a dreamer, not a leader, but her rivals are so useless, she has the chance to remain chancellor for many years yet. This might well mean yet further restrictions, on the right to freedom of speech in this country, for the native population.

It is very concerning to hear westerners on the political left constantly defending and excusing Muslim fanatics. Those burning and rioting over a silly internet film are NOT victims. They are intolerant religious nutters. And if they were scandinavian Odinists, or rightwing Christians from the U.S. south, those on the left would be the first to condemn the actions and attitudes of the religious fanatics.

So just what is the difference? The answer i suspect is a mixture of race; all this moral equivalency nonsense about how westerners are not suppose to view our civilization in a better light than non-western civilizations. And fear, of course, That much i do understand. I fear the followers of Islam because so many are irrational. Much are violently irrational than the average Christian or Hindu fundamentalist.

Germans had better understand that sooner or later they are going to have to confront this foreign, very alien and fantical culture before it's too late.

Just remember, the Nazis were big fans of Islam. They armed Bosniak Muslims against the Serbs in ww2
