The 49-year-old man was based in the Trier police station in Rhineland Palatinate, and was authorised to carry a service weapon, which a police spokesman said was the one he used.

Police suspect that the man was upset about his wife's plans to file for divorce. The woman had told her husband on Thursday that she wanted to end the marriage.

Both husband and wife had adult children from previous marriages, but none of them lived at the family home in Saarlouis.

Police said the man apparently planned the murder-suicide meticulously, though it appeared he did not leave a suicide note.

"We believe that he was unable to cope with his wife wanting to divorce him," chief detective Dieter Erbel said.

Story continues below…

An autopsy of the bodies is planned for Monday.

I wonder what their ethnicity and religious background was. Can you, Admin, please tell me or is it only relevant when you think it is relevant?

Human anguish is universal and cannot be classified according to religeon or ethnicity.

From the type of crime and the way it as comitted I would say that he was certainly German. When did you ever saw a black/turkish german cop? And if you did would it be a comissioner? >SaarLouis?

What more hints to do you? That should be enough to not feed neo nazi trolls, stromfront members and other bigots. ^^

Oh, yeah.. someone will moan the Jews made his wife divorce him! LOL!

I do know this person, but I would imagine him the model citizen with the perfect family ,representing the law in his domain. Then the wife ,hopefully not promiscuous, asked him for a divorce, and his world he created falls apart. To bad he saw fit to take his daughter with him, he was a selfish and conceded person.

Let's just call as @sshole an @idiot and leave it at that.

I will never understand someone that takes the life of a child on the premise "if I can't have her/him, then you can't", this is so selfish.

RIP little one!

When people have divorces, its not like the man goes his separate way, and the woman goes her way and that's it. The man has to deal with the woman taking half his stuff that he worked hard for. Plus, the woman (even though we are SUPPOSED to be living in a world of equality - ha!) will automatically claim the child and have a better chance to get the child just because she is a mother (which means nothing - fathers are parents too.)

The real problem here is that in a divorce the man is "the bad guy" and the woman is "the victim" and the rights of the man are way less. At least, that is how it seems to play out.

The laws, in particularly the divorce laws in modern civilizations, have to be changed - to bring real equality - or we are just going to see more of this. This is not a new phenomenon.

Think about it. If someone you put your heart and soul into came up to you one day and said I want a divorce, oh yeah, and I'm going to take your kids (and probably talk crap about you to them every chance I get) and take up to half of everything you worked for while we were together (even though I really had no part in any of that value that you earned with your stress and hard work)... what would you do? Now, on top of that, you have access to guns all the time...hmmmm...

Women should stand up with men and just look for equality in these issue... but they won't because in divorces, they are (for the most part) the recipients. I may be off base, but how many cases of women shooting their husbands because they want a divorce do you see?

@marvelous....i guess you are a mind reader....you don't know what was in his mind..or why he did what he did.....equality and all that s*** your speaking about his unnecessary....it's sad when someone take their life and another's life. God puts no more on a soul that what he knows they can bear...the choice is ours to deal with it or not.....2 souls are no longer with us....and that is sad.......and what he's done he will answer to GOD and not man.......take heed and be thankful that it wasnt you....it could have been....your not special in GOD's eyes....

@brnskin2010, I would say that equality has more to do with this than all that "s***" about GOD your speaking about.

This is yet another case of a German police officer going off the rails, which is disturbing as they are armed. You would think that the selection process and annual testing would sift out the potential nut jobs. If this police officer could resort to shooting his daughter, how many other police officers are out there with a below standard set of morality when it comes to right and wrong.

%$rk and @$$hole... I would sympathize with him if he hadn't killed the child, if he had only killed himself, but he did - therefore, %$rk and @$$hole to the power of ten

I agree in part with ValP. The guy was an moron. but! Even if he had only managed to kill himself. Still a moron.

One issue that always effects the police in a negative way is becoming cynical. My niece in the US is a sheriff at a jail facility. And she says she has to fight hard to not become cynical about people and society as a whole. the issue is. She and all police in general. Are exposed on a daily basis to the very worst that society has to offer. So after a while. Police even when off duty will look at a stranger on the street and even family members. And wonder what crime they have committed. And that is a terrible and mentally destructive way to life your life. I firmly believe that police should submit to the occasional interview and questionnaire. To evaluate weather the stresses of the job might be getting to their mental health.
