"The cross-eyed opossum Heidi has closed her eyes forever," said the zoo in Leipzig, eastern Germany.

The three-year-old animal had been treated for health problems for weeks and zoo officials decided to put her down "to spare her further pain and suffering."

Heidi's distinctive eye problem is thought to be due to a poor diet before she was abandoned in the United States, or because she was overweight, leading to fat deposits behind her eyes.

Her unique looks attracted thousands of visitors to Leipzig, spawning news reports and even talk of possible book or movie deals.

The unusual-looking opossum is the latest in a long line of animal stars to capture German hearts.

A polar bear called Knut in Berlin became a global media star in 2007, even appearing on the front page of Vanity Fair magazine, before plunging the country into shock with his sudden death earlier this year.

Then, during the last football World Cup in South Africa, an octopus named Paul shot to global stardom by correctly "predicting" the results of eight out of eight matches.

I know where you find a lot more to replace her.

Funny, liking an animal that is primarily known as being roadkill.

A letter to the Governor of Mississippi would probably get you a replacement Possum flown over on the next Mississippi National Guard C-17 Cargo Plane going to Frankfurt Airport. I have one that comes and stares at my dog every night through the glass door (possum not Governor). Last year she had babies, that rode around on her back..

@greti - I know what you mean, and it is a sad state of ignorance that is prevalent in the USA. People are literally ignorant of what is around them. With as much natural environment around us, it is baffling how closed and ignorant our people are as a while to things that go on right outside their door.

Possums are actually amazing animals from all aspects. Unfortunately, they have a bit of a PR problem and don't make the best company. In a lot of ways they are like geeks; bad social skills, dress frompy, avoid public and daylight hours, and cross streets with abandon... yet have amazing skills and unique characteristics that should be cherished.

I believe it is the only marsupial of North America, and has human like hands with opposable thumbs, whose hands/paws look freakishly like that of a human.

If Americans were just not so ignorant the world would be a better place.
