Leading European television group, RTL, a unit of Germany's Bertelsmann, is ready to spend more than €1 billion ($1.44 billion) for control of the Polish company TVN, press reports said Thursday.

The business daily Handelsblatt and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

(FAZ) said RTL was in competition with US group Time Warner and Vivendi of France for a controlling stake in the Polish television network.

The FAZ said that Discovery Communications and media mogul Rupert Murdoch were also interested in bidding for a 56 percent holding being offered by TVN's founders.

The reports said the race to take control of the Polish network was completely open and that a decision could come in the second half of September.
