Police discovered the bodies of two dead children in a burned car in Brandenburg early Friday morning.

Officials confirmed to the daily Berliner Morgenpost that a witness called them after seeing a badly burned person wandering through the woods near the small town of Börnicke about 4 am.

After officers arrived, they took the injured person to the hospital and found the bodies of the two children, thought to be under 14, in a car with a Danish flag on it.

Authorities declined to release additional information due to the ongoing investigation, but they said they were still not sure if the incident was a crime or an accident.

The site has been cordoned off and the post-mortems are being carried out on the bodies of the children, the Morgenpost reported.
