Police and state prosecutors in nearby Cologne in North Rhine-Westphalia are investigating a xenophobic motive to the attack, in which nine people had to flee a ground-floor apartment after assailants hurled several fire bombs through the windows around 12:25 am Monday.

All nine people in the apartment escaped unharmed but the apartment was totally burnt out by the blaze and only the intervention of the fire brigade stopped it destroying the rest of the building.

The attack came amid a heightened atmosphere surrounding far-right violence in the wake of the massacre of at least 76 people on Friday by a Norwegian nationalist.

Witnesses saw two young men wearing dark clothing fleeing the scene in a dark Volkwagen car, possibly a Golf or Polo, with number plates from the NRW city of Neuss, police reported. Daily Bild reported that the fleeing suspected had shaved heads.

A police spokesman confirmed to The Local on Tuesday morning that investigators were continuing to probe the possibility that right-wing extremists were behind the attack, though all avenues were being examined.

Twenty-one officers from the Cologne police, including members of the arson squad, were investigating.

The people whose apartment was bombed they are working people. Having a difficult life but still they are working and probably paying the tax to build this beautiful country to make more beautiful.

The coward neo nazis ( the dirty flies) who sleep all day and eats and lives on arbeit losen geld ( which comes from the tax payers money)attacks these poor people. Is this justified?

Please arrest these neo nazis and skinn off their head and tie them and put some salt and chilly powder and please plase show this punishment on tvs so that other fckin bstrds don't ever dare to do so

Calm down, yes it was wrong and arrest the perpetrators .

But how do you know all the facts? ,do you know the victims ?,

Is it justified you ask ,no of cause not, but until it is proved who did this don't jump to conclusions .Wait and see.

Looks like my original comments didn't come up because I commented directly on TT. Here it is again. Personally, I think the perps are their own.

Original post:

I lived 5 minutes walk away from this place. I condemn these actions but I am not entirely surprised.

If you read the news reports, you will see that the people living there were very well known to the city, but also well known by the residents. That particular corner is avoided because everyone knew very well that a large clan of gypsies lived in. They frequently stole from the stores in surrounding the area. They blare their loud music until sunrise. They block the streets with their Mercedes, BMWs, Rolles-Royces, Bentleys, and sometimes even Ferraris.

Even with some light police intervention, they don't care. They will call the police officers derogatory names and blew cigarette smoke straight into their faces. They really just don't care. I once saw one assault an officer and was promptly arrested. 2 hours later, he was back on the street.

The police always say they cannot do anything and said if we wanted peace and quiet, we should just move. So we did. The residents around the area complain and complain but whenever you mention that a "group of particular individuals", it's labeled as racism. To avoid issue, the police don't and won't do anything to remedy the problem. The politicians turn a blind eye as this is not the rich part of Leverkusen.

Lastly, I highly doubt it is a neonazi attack. It's more likely a clash between gypsy clans and using skin-heads as scapegoats. I often saw fights break out between the resident gypsies and "visiting" gypsies.

It's really sad because that area has potential to be very nice - 2 mins to a large park, 3 mins to the Rhine, 5 mins to the new shopping mall.
