Dog bites sausage-seller after vegan assault

Hendrik Z., a 29-year-old “grill walker” – one of Berlin’s legion of small businessmen who wear a portable grill and sell hot bratwurst – got into a tiff with passing animal rights activists.

The sausage seller told daily Berlin Kurier he was plying his trade at his usual spot on the Schloß Bridge in central Berlin when a demonstration by the activists passed by. Two of the protesters approached the sausage seller and tried to put vegan stickers on the clear plastic window that surrounds the grill.

“Of course I had to stop that,” he said. “I have nothing against vegetarians but I don’t let anyone force their opinions onto me.”

The situation escalated until one of his attackers, described as about 25, tattooed with earrings, pushed him to the ground and, he told the paper, kicked his leg.

A witness intervened to settle the dispute. However the 27-year-old witness’ German shepherd got excited and bit Hendrik Z. on the backside as he tried to get up.

The attacker fled back into the crowd of demonstrators.

Story continues below…

Hendrik Z said: “Luckily I’m vaccinated against tetanus so I didn’t need to go to hospital.”

The demonstrators in discussion seem to respect animals more than human but c'mon, live and let's live, Hendrik is perhaps an animal lover himself but he and his animal have to eat right??

I get the whole wanting to be vegan thing, but I can't say I have met a hardcore vegan that wasn't a complete self righteous moron.

I find this whole vegan movement distasteful (to put it politely). I can think of many examples of extremist vegans treating people like animals, and treating animals like people. How hypocritical. The forcing of a radical belief system onto other people, especially this man trying to make a living, is infuriating to me. These vegans will change their attitudes once their parents' money runs out, and real life confronts them sweetly in the night. They will be forced to grow up then. Really, not eating meat gives one license to be a jerk? Please...

If you want to believe something, why push it onto others? Because you need to convince others to convince yourself? Simply keep it to yourself if you really believe in it, then you won't have to protest and feel needy for attention. (I'm talking about belief-pushers here, the extreme vegans, not all vegans)

All of the above are absolutely correct.
20:49 June 20, 2011 by Simon_Kellett
(Disclaimer: first: I have been vegan for many years and proud of it: but I do not try to convert anyone. Secondly you would not recognise me as a vegan in the street (47, regular job, 2 kids, pay taxes...)

My observation is that perhaps some of the above posters could learn a little from Hendrik Z. He was the one who was attached, got bitten on the bum but, from the quotes we see above, seemed to remain good natured about the event.

Q: How do you find a vegan at a dinner party?

A: Don't worry, they'll let you know.

I find this whole dead animal eating movement distasteful (to put it politely). I can think of many examples of extremist carnists treating mistreating animals, even though they claim to be animal lovers. How hypocritical. I respect and understand people that choose to be Vegetarians for the sake of their own Health. Nonetheless, I think that being a Vegetarian for the purpose of not harming animals and then preaching to everyone that they are wrong is extremely annoying. Funny that animals eat animals (Lions, Hippos, Tigers, Cheetahs, etc.), but humans are not supposed to eat animals. Again, not bashing Vegetarians...I do respect your choice based on Health reasons and lifestyle, but if I want to enjoy a juicy steak or a German sausage, let me make that choice and leave me the hell alone!

Vegetarianism is very good, but a little meat is also needed to have a healthy body. Not too much meat, but a little.

Poor guy. There he is, minding his own business while plying his trade and this loser tries to, in effect vandalise his equipment. And he gets bitten for his troubles. I am so tired of these entitled little monsters who think that they have the right to force their beliefs on others. What a big man...going after a grill walker.

I just loved what SausagesGiveYouCancer wrote in response to #3. Having said that, I think it is unfair to pick on a sausage vendor. But I still have trouble imagining a "tattoed, with earrings" as a vegan. May be it is just me.

poor dog has too smell that real food and never taste because owner feeds him like rabbit.......

I cna see it now. It was a right winged Radical racist vegen.

I notice those that are most passionate about soemthing espoouse it. BUt not eating meat, now that is a sin. The taste of the freshly grilled Brat, throw soem curry, down it with an ice cold Coke, what better way to eat is there? The juice runs down your cheek as you bite that crisp outside soft inside roll, the taste of the Sharf Senf and the spices and juices of the brat....oh I am sooooo hungry and I miss Germany a great deal at this moment....

If God had not wanted us to eat a cow, he would not have made them look like Hamburgers....LOFL

Those who feed their dogs and cats a vegan diet should be charged with animal cruelty.
21:03 June 21, 2011 by Jack Kerouac
@SaugesGiveYouCancer : Changing words in a cut-and-paste is...so clever. Everyone should follow suit when they can't think of anything to say in response. Brilliant. By the way, how is 'changing the system' going?
21:16 June 21, 2011 by Raydoggy
The morons who eat this Brat worst crap deserve all they get, including cancer. What do they think goes into those things. Do a reality check carnivores.

I'd rather be a "self-righteous" vegan than someone who turns a blind eye to the billions of animals who are cruelly tortured every week just because selfish rednecks "likes the taste of it".
21:28 June 21, 2011 by rwk
I am a vegetarian, but this sort of behaviour is unacceptable. Perhaps the law needs to be changed so that a person's choice of diet is as protected as their race or religion. Then, these people could be prosecuted for hate crimes, which is what they are.

Hey ray doggy, thanks for not proving me wrong.

Btw, if you are not seriously careful when being a vegan, meaning you get your blood levels checked and checked often, you can become very deficient in certain vitamins and minerals which ends up weakening your immune system. A lot of people quit being vegan after they get very sick. So, I guess its not just meat eating 'rednecks' getting sick after all...

I am very much into natural and alternative health. Veganism will never be an option for me though, since I know about all the health benefits of animal products, especially for the brains sake. ;)

I am absolutely sure that being a complete vegetarian (or, even worse, a vegan!) is really unhealthy, so I agree with everyone who stated this point of view. It doesn't mean you have to gorge yourself on meat (especially those sausages - yuck and gross!!!!), but eating meat is natural and totally normal. Human beings are omnivores, they need a diet that contains both greens and animal proteins.

Oh, and did I mention that I really hate mean dogs and (probably more?) their mean and stupid owners?????
01:29 June 23, 2011 by Flint
@ raydoggy Hendrik Z. should have wokked the dog and served some Vietnamese fare.

He is not much of a salesman trying to sell sausages at a animal rights demo.

I don't know how food is grown in Germany, but the way factory farms. grow livestock in the USA in over-crowded and unsanitary conditions, and feed them antibiotics in their feed along with genetically modified corn and soy, and in their water likely herbicide and E-coli contaminated, the only safe eating practices are eating vegetarian or vegan.

In the USA, factory farms have either bought off regulators or Congress. Since no one is protecting the public and since organic agriculture and pasture fed beef up to the time of slaughter is not always available, I eat only vegan, unless I know how my food is grown.

Perhaps, the E-coli problem in Germany came from factory farming practices and the overuse of antibiotic in agriculture as if the case in the USA; and the reason Americans have problems with E-Coli and ineffective antibiotics. Just my guess. I don't know how your food is grown, or if it comes from the USA.

Pretty silly treatment of a common assault and battery case.

I am all for Animal Rights. Is not keeping animals in your homes at your control, locked up as prisoners not just as bad as the people who raise animals to eat?
15:14 June 25, 2011 by Bruno53
Don't forget that your Adolf Hitler hated to eat meat I understand. Do you Germans, and Europeans, need a symilar "tea baggers" movement and put this idiotic "humanists" in their place?

Is a gay vegan a true vegan if he eats his friend's man-sausage?
18:08 June 25, 2011 by vegetaren
Sorry to see that extreme people like these put a bad reputation on all of us, who just want to live in peace with our choise....

I think everyone could benefit from having an opinion on what they eat, not said, that means humans should not eat meat, but maybe a little bit more selective mind would be healthy, the way animals are held and the way the production is run is based on optimized gains and low prices.

Meat as it self seems to me as something healthy and I do cook meet, I have children and they ought to have a choise them selves, plus I have seen no proves it is helathy to feed children vegetarian. But I do choose meat of a sudden quality and they do like vegetables because it is a natural part of our dinner table.

So before we are all judges, I just want to say, we are many vegetarians who simply just would like to have our choise in peace ;-)
