Three of the victims died at the scene, including two women aged 60 and 65, as well as a 65-year-old man. Another man died in the hospital.

"The driver who caused the accident sustained minor injuries," a police spokesman said. The two passengers in the other car, which the 38-year-old driver apparently hit after running a red light, also had minor injuries.

An expert visited the site of the crash on Saturday evening to determine the speed at which both cars were travelling. The intersection in Hamburg was blocked off for several hours after the collision.

The pedestrians were standing in front of a bakery at the corner of Eppendorfer Baum and Eppendorfer Landstrasse when they were hit. Six streets intersect at this crossing, which is a busy area full of restaurants and shops, according to daily Hamburger Abendblatt.

"I was watching football and thought a house had collapsed or that something had exploded," resident Pierro Rossini told the paper. After running outside, he reported seeing several people lying on the sidewalk and hearing loud screams.

"I've never seen anything like it," Rossini said.

Minutes after the collision, rescue crews rushed to the scene. Witnesses said there were between 10 and 15 emergency vehicles on site, as well as a fire department vehicle.

Story continues below…

Later Saturday night, about 20 people gathered at the intersection, carrying candles.

I see this Russian roulette played everyday on my ride to work. Most of the time there is no accident (partly do to the long gap better one way going red, and the other going green), but sometimes it does not work out. In DA it seems to be trams that ram cars jumping red lights, which is even more stupid from the car drivers POV.

On another note, I assume/presume the driver was breathalysed?

I live right down the street from this intersection. I had no idea about the accident until I walked past a few hours later (showing a friend around the neighborhood) and saw how gruesome the scene was. That and the eerie silence in the area gave me the feeling that it was a serious accident, but I had no idea it was this bad.

I feel deeply for the victims and their families, and hope that the a--hole driver gets the requisite visit from karma.

According to Bild, the guy was high on marijuana (as tested at the crash scene), driving a borrowed car. What a winner.

So anyone reported that the driver was either a muslim or an immigrant? People already assuming that it was a male and must have been either drunk or high on drugs, c'mon couldn't quite possibly be just an old German frau not fit to drive a car, we've all seen them dithering around... or as I'd rather think just an idiot regardless of race, religion, political and sexual orientation who jumped a red light, that would be far too easy.

Germans can't drive, don't believe me, come to Berlin and see for yourself, Schumacher is a freak of nature

No he is the typical arrogant idiot who has little concern about the safety of others and puts them in danger whenever he is behind the wheel... oh and he's overrated!

WOW. LMFAO. How did we get to race anyways? BUt, really, this article was a bit vague about the WHO. SO in the absence of the WHO, it probaly will be something we fear, like it wasnt helmut onhis way to the Brat stand to get a Currywurst and bitburger.

Most any US paper would have provided the name and age and sex of theperson. You would then look at that info and draw your own conclusion as to teh national origin of the driver

most Germans reading this will be thinking the reason why he hit those people was due to a lack of skill, because he was a 'weak' driver or maybe he didn't have a well maintained technically superior car, then will then reassure themselves that for those reasons they don't need to worry about it because it wouldn't happen to them, and that is probably exactly what he thought as well
