Investigators apprehended the man at the Blaschkoallee U-Bahn station.

The arrest follows a wave of arson attacks on Muslim houses of worship in Berlin in recent months. No one was injured, but the fires caused property damage in every case.

The assailant or assailants routinely left messages behind at the scene. Police did not describe the notes in detail, but media reports said the messages were collages of newspaper articles.

Following a comprehensive investigation, state prosecutors reportedly obtained a warrant to search the offices of the Berlin daily newspaper B.Z. A police spokesman said investigators confiscated evidence that strengthened the case against the suspect.

According to the newspaper's editor-in-chief, Peter Huth, the suspect contacted B.Z. in mid-December under false pretenses, requesting a copy of a newspaper article. Huth said an employee received the inquiry.

"Wisely, she took down the name and the address and was able to inform police officers on Friday afternoon, which allowed for an arrest within a few hours," B.Z.'s editor said.

A police spokesman said the man arrested Friday is suspected of involvement in four of seven arson attacks on Berlin mosques since June of last year. Investigators are examining whether the suspect has any connection to the other incidents.

Story continues below…

Most recently, the entrance of a mosque of the Ahmadiyya community in the Wilmersdorf district of Berlin was set ablaze in the early hours of January 8. Mosques in the districts of Neukölln and Tempelhof were targeted in similar attacks in 2010.

@GOTJ13 & surj

I don´t know what you expect the German Politicians & the Polizei to do. So, you expect them to leave the rogues burning mosques on German soil? just because Muslims attack Christians in Islamic countries? I think the Politicians & Chiefs of Police are smarter than that (forget political correctness) maybe you don´t know, Governments in most Islamic countries fight terrorists & extremists way more than it´s done here.

Isn't it a bit uncomfortable typing from underneath your beds?

So you support arson and domestic terrorism so long as the targets are Muslims, is that correct? Just asking.
17:22 January 22, 2011 by ahmdsamir
@GOTJ13 I as a Muslim welcome your suggestion that the berliner police should investigate those alleged crimes in those counties. But in return you should welcome the police of say Karachi to do some investigations in Berlin for all the hate crimes that go around here. Would you like that? I'm sure you would.

excellent police work! no crime should go unpunished.

It is always sad and unfortunate that a person or group of people will desecrate and terrorize a place of worship or cultural center that most if not all of the patrons attending had nothing to do with.

Messages of hate only bring on more of the same.

This individual was probably a spy wanting to create enemies for the country and make the country look bad. These days it has become typical of many spies to create counflict and fights. We have an honost hard working heart and love to help society and build the future a better place for mankind. The German police are the best of arresting any trouble maker.
08:19 January 23, 2011 by storymann
@Scotti& jamesvik... That sure is a refreshing open minded opinion,,most of the people attending these places are citizens of Germany.. enticed to come here by the Germans,,I assume you are concerned as Hitler was over the purity of arian blood...didn't work then doubt if it will work again, but as long as there are hate mongers like yourself we will never be certain.

The immigration policies are the problem for people like yourself,,you and your ilk would do better to work on changing those as opposed to domestic terrorism.

Didn't your parents teach you two wrongs don't make a right.?

@ Scottt,

you are not German. I can tell when you make a reference to Europe as a general. As a German, I will tell you that Germans are the most kind hearted people. They work really hard and truly care for the benefit of mankind. Germans are smart, peace loving, and generous toward their neighbors. I will tell you one thing, I am 100% sure that people such as your self you love to spread hate against Germany by making it look bad, and you like to create enemies for Germany you will never succeed. Germans are peace-loving, people and they want to help the world by creating a better future for mankind.

God bless all.

My parents taught me ,"violence begets violence"..I would agree that rapid immigration from Muslim countries in large numbers will change the demographics in a negative way for a non immigrant and orderly society as we find here in Germany.

The point that was made concerning regulations pertaining to immigration ,are and should be carefully scrutinized to prevent this.

Germany is a country that has and will bring a lot to the world in a positive way. I do not want to see this country changed into a melting pot.Let The USA ,Canada and other immigrant nations do that,. As we have all read lately, immigration is becoming a problem in these lands also,to deny that is to be obtuse. As xenophobic as this may sound, out of control or unrealistic immigration policies are detrimental to most established and functional societies.

You have spoken as a true German, a true German who loves his country & has the true original German blood. Afterall, Hitler himself was not a German..I always say that most people that preach hate & total anti-immigrant campaign here are enemies of Germany. People should leave Germany ALONE! these crimes were committed on German soil and the authorities have the reponsibilty for the security of lives & properties. I´m sure some people will complain if the authorities decided to fold their hands and watch.
