Hundreds of passengers booked to fly from Berlin on Easyjet planes saw their travel plans ruined over the weekend as connections were cancelled, seemingly due to a lack of air crew, the Tagesspiegel reported on Sunday.

The trouble started on Friday with some flights being cancelled or postponed until Saturday, the paper wrote, causing chaos at the capital's Schönefeld Airport.

Television reports that the queues of frustrated passengers were this time not caused by volcanic ash problems or striking ground staff, but airline personnel shortages, were confirmed by insiders, the paper wrote.

Berlin Airports spokesman Ralf Kunkel said that several hundred passengers were hit by cancelled flights over the weekend, while no-one from Easyjet was available to comment to the newspaper.
