Chairman of the Protestant Church Council Margot Käßmann condemned the war in Afghanistan as immoral on Thursday and called on the German government to come up with an exit strategy immediately.

"Even by the loosest possible standards of the Protestant Church, this war is unjustifiable. That is why there needs to be an end to the violent conflict as soon as possible," the Bishop of Hannover Margot Käßmann said in Thursday's edition of the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung.

"German soldiers need to be withdrawn from Afghanistan as soon as possible," Käßmann said, though she emphasised that the manner of the pullout should not be hasty, but calm and ordered.

She called it "infuriating" that "military methods had once again taken priority" before other methods. "The population will only accept a peaceful new beginning if peaceful methods are used," she said. Käßmann also called for peace talks with the Taliban.

The bishop defended the use of vicars in the military as support for soldiers. "They are not blessing the war, but providing spiritual companionship for human beings," she said.

As the head of the umbrella organisation for German Protestants the EKD, Käßmann represents 22 branches of Protestantism in Germany.

Her appeal comes as Germany's parliament prepares to consider sending another 2,000 troops to Afghanistan, to add to the 4,400 already on the ground. A decision is expected late January.

Sure, lets leave the Afgans to their own devices. Then they can suffer thru all the trials the Taliban and Al Queda can inflict on them without Germany's help. This would save the German taxpayer money and besides it is obviously the Christian thing to do. Merry Christmas Frau Kässman!

Margot!! What on earth are you talking about? Unless of course you know something that we don't? Why not just go home and have a nice cup of tea and while you are at it, why not invite a few Taliban along too for I am sure they will appreciate your words of sympathy for their 'Oh so noble cause'.......

C'mon Margot, open your eyes and not just your heart..... please?

Only an observation from a poor American....but it would seem like the most "unjustified" in existence today....is Hartz IV. Why would the good reverend now denounce it too....while stating this around Christmas? Surely she can see the hundreds of thousands of people on Hartz IV and their suffering first hand.

Christian behavior would demand that pain and suffering via Hartz IV be ended.

Somehow.....I suspect that Margot is not as Christian as she claims. And if she's not....then what is she? A religious figure with a political agenda....and nothing more? Once you lose your morale compass on ethics....you are basically lost.

I'd like to know if she was one of the 750.000 + people who demonstrated on Unten den Linden strasse when Bush was poised to strike in 2002.

The 'war' was down right wrong from the start.

A 'war' based on lies...

Are these the Protestant churches that were so accomidating in Hitler's time. As far as I am concerned the only real Lutheran Churches are the confessional ones, who inidently stood up to Hitler. What did these bums do to help the German people when they were occupied by the Russians for half a century.

By the way lady dressed as a Pastor, why don't you go talk to the Talii-bums aren't you a religous leader? Knowing their love of Christains and women's rights that would be interesting.

Martin Luther would never have sided with Muslims against a German Army fighting for another countries Freedom.

Hi Cleavage

Thanks for the web address about the "educated man" railing against the important war to contain Iraq but unfortunately it wasn't very enlightening. I enjoyed the link for sexy girls on that page however.
