The child apparently lost its pet guinea pig while cleaning its cage.

“The guinea pig immediately recognised his singular chance to flee to freedom and disappeared quickly into a nearby blackberry bramble,” the fire department reported.

But “nothing in the world” would persuade the animal to return home, they said.

The family called the fire department, who first cut back the bush and then used an infrared camera to locate the wily cavy.

Story continues below…

A fireman then got down on all fours and scooped up the freezing animal, returning it to the child.

Then the fireman got back on his feet and walked back to the fire engine, as did the other firemen. They packed away the infrared camera and got back to the fire department to wait for the next assignment that would make the news. Waving goodbye, the child went back into the house, trying to think of a proper form of punishment. Now, what was it again you did with guinea pigs...?

So you get charged to be rescued from a dangerous carnival ride. But its free of charge to call the fire department to rescue your freezing guinea pig?

Cute guinea pig. Looks just like a big rat, only nicer colors.

Hmmmm....aside from the occasional collapsed-structure retrieval operation, why does the FIRE department keep night-vision equipment on-hand?! Any sustained intense light (like, say, from a fire) makes them completely unusable!! I bet they also have thermal-vision gear for detecting the body heat from victims in burning buildings!! lol

Guten Abend meines freunden.

This story about the guinea pig is so wonderful. When I visited Frankfurt in 1984 -- to meet my birth mother and connect with my brother and sister -- my mother took me to the Frankfurt zoo. There was an AWESOME guinea pig exhibit.

Kudos to the fire brigard in Alzenau for saving the guinea pig.
