The German telecommunications regulator said Monday it will force Deutsche Telekom to open its high-speed internet network to competitors.

The regulator responded to a complaint by a German division of the British telco group Vodafone, and is to fix conditions under which companies can access Deutsche Telekom's VDSL network, the only one of its kind at present in Germany.

Vodafone and others want to run their own fibre optic cables and switching equipment, and need to use the existing network to avoid major public works.

The regulator said the decision represented "an important step for more competition in high-speed internet access," and planned to release details on what Deutsche Telekom will be allow to charge for the access in a separate ruling.

Telekom has invested several billion euros to bring its VDSL network to 50 cities.
