Tanker spills 8,000 litres of lubricant on A1 motorway
A tanker truck on Friday morning overturned after taking a curve at high speed and lost some 8,000 litres of machine lubricating oil on the A1 motorway in the state of Lower Saxony, police reported.
The truck was travelling at an “unsuitable speed” when it lost control on a curve and rammed into a guard rail. The 56-year-old Danish driver had intended to turn onto the A261 motorway and travel towards Flensburg, police reported.
The exterior of the tank holding the oil was damaged, and more than half of the 14,000 litres it held leaked out onto the motorway and a bordering embankment.
Portions of both the A1 and A261 were closed for the entire day for clean up, police reported, adding that drivers should expect major delays.
A special company was hired out of Rotenburg for the clean up operation.
Police estimated the accident damages to be around €100,000.
