The 31-year-old policewoman was taken to hospital, a police spokesman said, while the 18-year-old soldier was taken in custody by British military police.

The assault happened in the town of Bad Fallingbostel, where there is a British army base.

The policewoman and a male colleague on patrol came across the brawl between the soldiers and locals. After calling for backup, they tried to break up the men.

But the men fled into a park. As the officers gave chase, the accused soldier allegedly turned on her and punched her repeatedly in the face and around the head.

He also tried to attack the second officer, who came to her rescue, but was stopped by the local men with whom he’d been brawling. The woman was left dazed and bleeding heavily.

Story continues below…

Only when the police reinforcements arrived could the drunken soldier be subdued and arrested.

German police took an alcohol reading of the man before handing him over to British military police.

Actually that happens more often than one might think.

Not with national police officers but in Grafenwöhr the bar brawls sometimes erupted into wild three party mass brawls involving the military police.

I remember one occasion at which u.s and german military police joined a brawl between u.s soldiers, german soldiers and locals together involving around 25 to 30 people in the end :-D

Lots of bloody noses and bruises.

No idea who started it and what everything was about but in the end it was two military police teams against the whole world. lol

And in the end the MPs won. Kind of.... :-D

The bar owner was the big looser of course.

But ive never heard of a woman being beaten. Thats really low.

Occupations need to end. Occurrences likes this should not happen, particularly between uniformed soldiers and locals, whatever the reason in this case.

It's not a surprise as what we know, british are famous of bad drinking habits....BINGE DRINKING
03:07 November 30, 2009 by wxman
The answer is, pull ALL foreign troops out of Germany. Their presence is still nothing more than occupation troops from 60 years ago. The Germans can defend themselves from any threat, and if not, too bad. None of our business.
09:06 November 30, 2009 by Johnne
First of all I don´t know what foreign troops are defending. In a civilized & developed 1st world country like Germany, there shouldn´t be anything like that anymore, why? for christ sake the war ended 60 yeras ago...isn´t this shameful?

The real story is that a British soldier injured a police officer, but the The Local seems to focus on it being a woman. Although I have sympathy for anyone being injured in such a way, the officer chose to be in the police and if the opinion is that if a police woman that gets injured is too bad then perhaps they shouldn't be put into places of danger but instead left to do desk work and search woman suspects. But of course equal opportunities should say that a woman police officer should expect to face the same dangers as a male counterpart, probably she does but that doesn't stop people being amazed and shocked, focusing on her femininity, which IMO is irrelevant to the crime committed!

Of course there may be another hidden story here, about the role of foreign troops in Germany which evidently is being seized upon by some. Calling NATO troops occupiers is just as ridiculous as saying "well they started the war, they invaded Poland", both are inappropriate and for a long time out of date. Regardless of the economic value, NATO/EU forces are based in Germany as partners for collective defence, they need to train together for the coalition to be effective. But to suggest Germany can defend itself without NATO, limited action in Afghanistan and a conscript dependant armed force built out of 6 month poorly trained soldiers says otherwise.

However back to the real story, some soldiers are indeed morons getting drunk and fighting, but it isn't a popular past time enjoyed just by British troops, it isn't even reserved for soldiers of all nationalities but civilians do it to. Incidents like this probably happens many times throughout Germany but doesn't make headlines because it doesn't involve British/foreign troops, which is the exact reason why all soldiers regardless of nationality have a duty to not bring their nation into disrepute. The soldier concerned may indeed receive a heavy punishment but the route cause of binge drinking/violence should be dealt with, namely education and support for mental health issues.

Although I'll never condone such an attack on authority, from experience the German police may have a part to blame. Perhaps as a result of too many experiences the German police do tend to tarnish all British people with the same brush, i.e. British male equates to being a soldier and therefore guilty. Their incompetence to adopt impartiality and even handedness regarding nationality IMO may inflame a situation that could have been resolved peacefully. It seems at times that the German police need to remember that their role is to support the public interests not just enforce the law, and then they may regain the respect that an effective police force requires and deserves.

But all said and done hitting a police officer is pretty stupid regardless of the sex.

1. "After calling for backup, they tried to break up the men." Oh, come now. The point of calling for backup is to have additional officers on the premises and ready to assist. These two officers rightfully recognized an un-winnable situation and took the proper step to modify their chances.

However, they erred when - having CALLED for backup - they were emboldened to take premature action, engaging the drunk PRIOR to the ARRIVAL of the additional officers. This decision lead to the officer's injury.

2. Immoderate use of alcohol is a reason, not an excuse. An altered mind does not function well, no matter what it has been trained to do in the past. Narcotics and alcohol both will wipe out a person's humanity. Those who over indulge in either try to use it as an excuse, but THEY are the ones who've DECIDED to over indulge. This is proof they are idiots.

3. There is a shocking lack of understanding of geopolitics and economics in some of the above comments. (Moistvelvet is the exception of note, others present but not named.) Germany is 'occupied'?! Germany doesn't need or benefit from foreign troops on its soil?! Twits. Please - let's play chess for money.

4. The soldier could have and would have abused a male officer as quickly and thoroughly as the unfortunate female. He was out of his mind - not a misogynist. He is an embarrassment to the Brits in particular and all other fighting forces of the world in general for his utter lack of respect for his hosts.

5. We don't hear the female officer simpering about being beaten up. I'd bet she's a tough broad who wiped her nose and went back to work as soon as her superiors allowed her to do so.

6. A percentage of EVERY population; be it a country, or a company, an organization, or a classroom, or a family will be drunks, drug addicts, abusers, thieves, murderers, rapists, con men and idiots. The reputation of innocent members always suffers when one is discovered and publicized.

Whatever the reasons from this group of people who try to cover up their "DRUNKARD SOLDIERS".They are idiot in the eyes of Germans and the whole world.

Many news around the world reports "bad drinking habits" of brits. So no excuse...
13:14 November 30, 2009 by bobthebob
As what I know many locals here don't like this brits they are so misbehave.Maybe their govt. will investigate why many brits soldiers killed in afghanistan maybe they go on binge drinking.
13:25 November 30, 2009 by Helligånds
My German friends and I visited a pub here, and when we heard a group of brits coming we immidiately made an exit, because we know they are so crazy after drinking.I even saw the bad facial reaction of the pub owner when this group enter his pub.

I have to smile at some of the niavety of postings on here. It's no wonder the tabloids sell so many copies when there are so many dumb people in the world.

Events like this happen the world over. Because there is the mention of soldiers and british and germans everyone starts blaming it on "unneccessary occupation" or "dumb Drunken Soldiers" or any other unrelated elements mentioned in the story.

Take out the British Soldiers in Germany part and what you are left with is a story that happens ALL the time because some people are a***holes when they are drunk NOT because they are soldiers or MPs. One moron hit a woman. Totally unacceptable I agree.

The people on here pinning this to a British mentality alone are also racist morons in my opinion. It happens EVERYWHERE but they like to jump on the band wagon and blame it on just the British. We have a terrible reputation yes but it's perpetuated by idiots like this. I'm waiting for the football hooligan element to be mentioned. The cliche just has to come out at some point here :-)

Grow up people !
13:43 November 30, 2009 by bobthebob
Gaffers, at least you know the "known behaviour of your own kind.More there that you know??? that we don't know???
13:47 November 30, 2009 by moistvelvet
bobthebob, helligands,

believe it or not most people who go into a pub just want to enjoy a drink in peace, but oh no people like yoursleves are not happy with that and decide to label all British males as violent drunken thugs, god help us if you are responsible for educating any childrend whatsoever.

A bar in Germany that displays a sign saying "OUT OF BOUNDS" in English is on the verge of rasicm, people who avoid British people due to the actions of a minority are virtually racist too. Exactly what is the big difference in that and people wrongly stereotyping Germans as being National Socialists? None, both blinkered views are unacceptable and biggoted.
13:56 November 30, 2009 by Gaffers
bobthebob. I'm not sure I understand your comment. Are you saying I am admitting the British are like that because if you are you haven't read my post but have been very selective in what you saw there. I mention that this is typical behaviour of every country. Not only the British. There are FAR worse offenders but it's easy and lazy to continue labelling the British as thugs than to actually think for a second.

If that's not what you are saying could you clarify?
14:12 November 30, 2009 by Helligånds
gaffers, that is not a typical behaviour of everycountry.News here in my country, CNN,BBC and more.... I only saw the "brits" urinating ,bitting each others, taking out their pants in the public, jumping in the high building because they are drunk etc... so humiliating that people in other countries really cannot take it looking what the people there are doing. It's alraedy beyond the normal civilized people can do. So don't blame that other people afraid mingling you in the pubs.
14:26 November 30, 2009 by Gaffers
Sorry Helligands but absolute B******* !

Are you really trying to tell me that you don't see this from other countries? What blinkered rock do you live under?

How many links would you like me to post showing news stories from around the world of this? I'm sure you are capable of doing this yourself.

Oktoberfest alone this year there was an AUSTRALIAN who fell from a high building because he was drunk. There were Germans who fell under trains and started fights. Irish, Scottish, German, Italians all misbehaving badly.

In other countries the fighting is far worse and includes knives and weapons (Italian and Turkish football hooligans for example). So please, before you post such a blatant untruth that it is only the British, do a little more reading...
14:35 November 30, 2009 by moistvelvet
Helligands, which country is that then? It seems that you are confusing a style of news reporting as being a true reflection of society. I agree that British media paints a bad picture, but it isn't a true reflection... or do you really think that all because you see that on the BBC then all British people are the same? Perhaps believing this to be true allows you to accept your perceived racism of British people to be justified. NEWSFLASH - it is not!
14:57 November 30, 2009 by Dogs_Gonads
I work for the British Army and see this every single week end.

And it is always the same faces getting into trouble and coming back in a silver and blue taxi.

Oh and for those that say why are the Brit's and the US still here, 60 years after the war finished.

Go and speak to your local Burgermeister, where NATO troops are stationed and they will tell you it is 'money money money'.

Germans are not fond of nonsense excuses.
16:40 November 30, 2009 by berliner12
The behavior of this idiot is really not acceptable here. They can behave bad as much as they can in their own country but not here.
16:52 November 30, 2009 by barracks
Asking why this brits army still in Germany.Because they don't have a space for them in britain it's overcrowded there. Pity for Germans dealing this kind of people.

Wxman just to give you a few facts, when the wall came down ALL american military was planning on leaving over a period of time in fact they would all be out by now. But the german goverment asked the americans to not pull out mainly because of the economic value. Im not speaking for the brits but before you or anyone condems america for staying, just remember this is what the german goverment has wanted to keep.
17:31 November 30, 2009 by Gaffers
Fascinating Helligands but relying on the Daily Mail for facts? If you really get your view of the world from these trash newspapers which it appears you do then that's VERY misguided ! The tabloids don't use fact but sensationalism to sell papers.

Try this link to the beer consumption per capita which shows Germany consumes on average 15% more beer per person than the British ! So Germans have an even worse habit it appears.

Not the smartest argument from you is it? I would get help for your racist views.

21:06 November 30, 2009 by arbeitsmunich
the evidence is there how this brits drunkard army behave here in germany. So no need to give us evidences, we don't behave like brits thats all.
21:14 November 30, 2009 by barracks
daily mail is a trash newspaper ha!ha!...because you cannot accept the TRUTH.You cannot twist our mind how the world look at your country and the people.Come on...maybe you are still sleeping and dreaming.

I'm brits but I dont like to condone this group of idiots here.

"Yawn" - I can't believe this is news. I lived as a British exchange student in Osnabruck for a year in the mid-nineties where this happened all the time with British soldiers. The locals generally just greeted it with a collective shrug; afterall they'd had 50 years of it. It's par for the course for any barrack town in any country.
