83-year-old held hostage in cellar over land dispute
Bavarian police have freed an 83-year-old man from a Starnberg cellar where a couple were holding him hostage in a land dispute.
Police special forces overcame the 59 and 66-year-old pair early on Monday morning. They then proceeded to free the elderly man from the cellar where he had been bound and threatened with firearms.
The couple kidnapped the elderly man on Sunday afternoon, police said, adding that the event was connected to a land dispute. The couple had apparently hoped to avoid losing a piece of their property. The legal battle has lasted for at least a year and involves claims of more than €1 million, police said.
The elderly man kidnapped by the couple is a notary, and police are investigating how his profession is relevant to the crime, they said.
