Schmidts, who won the "Miss Baden-Württemberg" title last year, saw off 22 rivals from all over the country to clinch the crown.
“I will represent Germany with charm and hard work,” the brown-haired student said as she accepted the title in an event at the Europa-Park in Rust in Baden-Württemberg. “I’m so happy that I won.”
The 20-year-old, who will suspend her management studies for a year to carry out her obligations as Germany’s top beauty queen, will also receive a car and paid trips to Puerto Rico, Paris and the Baltic Sea island of Borkum.
The 23 finalists between the ages of 17 and 22 presented themselves in hot pants and swimsuits first and later in evening gowns. Maria Ishutova, a 20-year-old student from Düsseldorf won second place while Kristiana Rohder, 25, from Munich came in third.
The jury members included women’s boxing world champion Regina Halmich, prominent plastic surgeon Werner Mang and Olympics athletics winner Heike Drechsler.
Horst Klemmer, organizer of the 82-year-old beauty contest, said the competition had attracted a record number of entries. More than 7,500 young women from all over Germany applied for a spot this year, Klemmer said – an increase of 1,500 compared to last year.
