Doctor dramas make viewers afraid of hospitals
Those who watch an above average amount of television hospital dramas are likely to be afraid of hospitals, according to researchers at the German Surgery Society (DGCH) this week.
Shows like “ER” and “Grey’s Anatomy” have a big impact on viewers according to a patient poll, Dr. Kai Witzel said in anticipation of releasing the study at DGCH conference in Berlin next Wednesday. Those who watch more of these dramas than others are even more susceptible to these fears because the unrealistic portrayals cloud their view of reality.
Belgian researchers from the Hasselt University discovered a connection between higher levels of sickness fear and frequent medical drama consumption this September, the magazine reported. But these researchers said they had only found a correlation, and that perhaps those who tend toward fearing sickness are drawn to medical themes.
