Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit has persuaded MTV to hold its 2009 Europe Music Awards show in Berlin, according to a report in Saturday’s Tagesspiegel newspaper.

The first European MTV awards gala was held in Berlin in 1994, designed to be a counterweight to the US version, and was supposed to set a sign of acknowledgement and respect for European music.

Since then the show, which takes place in early November to huge fanfare, has been held in different European cities, with this year’s being hosted by Liverpool.

An official announcement is planned for Wednesday, when Wowereit is expected to take credit for persuading organisers to decide for the German capital rather than Amsterdam, which was until recently considered the front-runner.
