Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney are out of England's friendly with Germany in Berlin next week after missing Manchester United's win over Stoke on Saturday.

Ferdinand has a back injury while Rooney is struggling with a calf problem and neither featured in the 5-0 rout at Old Trafford.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, speaking after the Stoke match, confirmed the duo would be missing from Fabio Capello's squad which will turn out in the capital on Wednesday.

“Rio and Wayne are out of the internationals,” he said.

“Rio hurt his back in training and Wayne had a chest infection but also had a calf strain so we pulled him out.”
