A case involving a chunk of wood thrown from a motorway bridge that killed a Lower Saxony woman in a passing car goes to trial on Tuesday.

Nikolai H., 30, will stand trial in Oldenburg for allegedly throwing a six-kilogramme wooden block from a motorway bridge on the A29 near Oldenburg on Easter Sunday. A 33-year-old mother of two was killed when the block crashed through the passenger side of her family's passing car.

Also travelling in the car were the victim's husband and two children, aged seven and nine. They were not injured.

The suspect initially admitted he'd committed the crime, but has since retracted the confession.
