A provocative new musical about a fictitious pope that is critical of key positions held by the Catholic Church opens in Munich on Thursday.

The Deutsches Theatre in the Bavarian capital will present the work “In Nomine Patris” by Viennese composer Bernd Stromberg.

The musical addresses controversial topics such as the sexuality of members of the clergy. Stromberg said the Church had become so inflexible it had “turned to stone” and its attitudes towards the celibacy of priests, children born out of wedlock, and women in general were “not in touch with the times.”

Californian musical performer Dean Welterlen will play the main role of the pope.
