Thieves steal excavator and mow down German bank for ATM

Thieves in Rheinau in the German state of Baden-Württemberg broke into a bank and stole a cash machine using an excavator they took from a nearby construction site, police reported Monday.

The unknown robbers stole the earth-mover early in the morning and drove it through a Sparkasse bank branch, extracting the cash machine from the rubble, police said. The cost of damages to the building and the amount of money taken aren't yet clear.

A woman who lives near the construction site called police when loud noises woke her early Monday morning, but authorities arrived too late only to find the excavator still running before a pile of debris.

A Rheinau police spokesperson said there are no leads on the identity of the thieves, and think they may have fled to France with another stolen car from the area.
