A six-year-old girl is in the hospital with a broken leg and possibly fractured spine after her mother threw part of a sofa out of an attic apartment which hit the child.

According to a report by police on Friday, the mother, 28, was in her apartment in the town of Lüdenscheid in North Rhine-Westphalia with an acquaintance selecting items that were to be taken to the dump.

The mother told police that both she and person with her looked out of the apartment to ensure that no one was below and called out a warning before letting the 1.5-metre sofa section drop.

Despite the precautions, the woman’s daughter was hit by the couch as it fell from the 15-metre window.

The girl was taken by helicopter to a hospital in the city of Münster and police are investigating the mother, who could face a charge of grievous bodily harm.
