The number of jobless people in Germany went up by 268,000 to 3.032 million from December to January, though the BA said the difference was seasonally related.

"An increase (in jobless numbers) is common during the winter season but this year's increase was smaller than in recent years. Seasonally adjusted employment has fallen by 9,000 from the previous month," read the BA's statement.

There are 2.836 million unemployed people in Germany in the seasonally-adjusted numbers.

In fact, the unemployment figures are better than January 2014, when a further 104,000 people were without work.

"The labour market is linked to last year's good performance," said BA chief Frank-J. Weise.

Parallel to the rising jobless numbers, the number of people in socially insured employment also rose.

More than 22,000 people in Germany found themselves gainfully employed in December to bring the total labour force to 42.87 million people.

That was a rise of 404,000 employed people compared with the same time period last year.

Meanwhile, there are still lots of opportunities in Germany. Employers reported 485,000 available jobs, 60,000 more than last year, to reach an all time high.

Industries particularly crying out for workers include sales, transportation and logistics.
