The survey, by the research institute for the federal employment agency (IAB), showed a total of 1.13 million positions vacant.

Also on Thursday, the federal statistics office released figures showing the number of people in active employment in Germany in the fourth quarter stood at 41.6 million, a record high since reunification in 1990.

The IAB surveyed around 15,000 companies in different sectors to assess the number of vacancies in the economy.

"Fears over future economic trends do not seem to be realised on the labour market," said IAB researcher Alexander Kubis in a statement.

There are a total of 81.8 million people in Germany, Europe's most populous country.

Germany has astonished economists with its resilience to the eurozone debt crisis, with unemployment at record lows, often hailed in the German press as a "jobs miracle."
