The economy is humming along and unemployment is declining, but German workers are still apparently afraid they could get sacked this year.

According to figures from the Health Ministry published on the website of conservative daily paper Die Welt, workers took sick leave for 3.4 percent of their shifts in the first quarter of 2008 – a decline of eight percent over the same period last year and 20 percent when compared to 2005.

The figures translate into missing nearly two workdays in the first three months of the year. The Healthy Ministry statistics include all German employees with state health insurance.
