“Of the some 30 million gainfully employed people in Germany, around one million already today regularly have an extra job,” the institute’s labour expert Hebert Buscher told news agency DPA. “That trend is growing.”

He said average Germans needed to seek out extra income in order to make up the difference between the increasing cost of living and wages that haven’t grown accordingly in recent years.

The hardest hit group is those workers with low or no qualifications.

“Normally simple jobs are supposed to provide enough earnings to live from, but in reality families and single parents can’t get by,” said Buscher.
