The Local list – Mothers’ Day

The Local list – Mothers’ Day

Ursula von der Leyen: arguably the German government's actual chief mother - the country's Labour and Social Affairs Minister has seven children. She has spoken about how her doctor husband takes on a large share of the child care - and her wealth enables her to employ help. Not unlike Angelina Jolie, one might almost say. Photo: DPA
Mothers Without Borders: a group of women from the Kreuzberg area of central Berlin sick of seeing their children being pulled into the world of drug dealers. The Mütter ohne Grenzen set up night-time patrols of the worst-hit areas with torches, shaming drug dealers into going elsewhere and hopefully leaving their children alone. They also offer support to children targeted by dealers to act as couriers who cannot be arrested - and advice to their parents. Photo: DPA
Johanna Juliane Pforte: a slight cheat here - she is a mummy rather than a bone fide mummy. A German woman from Nedlitz near Magdeburg, she died aged 70 more than 250 years ago. Her body, and that of a man were laid to rest in a dry, breezy crypt - where their bodies were perfectly preserved. They have just been put on display at the church. Photo: DPA
"Mutti" Merkel: perhaps the biggest misnomer in German politics, Chancellor Angela Merkel is sometimes nicknamed "Mutti" or mum. It pops up in some newspapers and allegedly sometimes among politicians, although only, one assumes, when she is not within hearing. She doesn't actually have children. Photo: DPA
Mother and her Dead Son: the statue of a grieving woman holding the body of her dead son, created by the sculptor Käthe Kollwitz and housed in the Neue Wache on Berlin's Unter den Linden. The 1818 building has always been used by different governments to commemorate the dead of war, and after German reunification Kollwitz's statue was installed as an expression of that loss. Here flowers are laid to mark the Srebrenica massacre.Photo: DPA
Erika Schröder-Vosseler: famous because of the effect she had on her son Gerhard, who was German chancellor from 1998 to 2005. "We called her the lion because she fought for us her whole life long," he wrote after she died last year. She was born in 1913, lost her first husband in WW2 and her second to lung disease. After that she raised her five children alone, and worked as a cleaner to feed them all. Photo: DPA
And finally, Baby - a French bulldog living as a pet at the Lehnitz animal sanctuary in Brandenburg. She adopted six wild boars after they were found cold and starving in nearby woods, their mother possibly killed by hunters. Although she was not much bigger than they were, she took her mothering duties very seriously.
Click here for a photo gallery of Baby with her babies
Photo: DPA
