Each publicly insured parent in Germany can now receive five extra days of a benefit to care for their sick child (Kinderkrankentagegeld), bringing the total to 15 for each parent.

Just what is the child sickness benefit?

Under German law, parents already received a total of 10 days each, or 20 days for single parents.

The benefit applies for children under 12 who live at home, although the age limit and number of days can be modified depending on the situation, for example a seriously ill child.

In order to receive the benefit, parents need a certificate from their child’s doctor stating that they can’t work because they need to stay home to care for their child.

In order to be able to calculate the benefit, the statutory health insurance provider also requires a certificate of earnings.

Just as with the normal sickness benefit, parents receive 90 percent of their salary.

However, the current days, which were granted due to the coronavirus crisis, are currently only granted until December 31st 2020.

Better opportunities for children

As part of the series of decisions, Germany is also set to better fund teaching, learning and communication opportunities for schools, students and teachers.

"To this end, the federal government will support the states, among other things, with an immediate funding program with a volume of a further €500 million,” stated the German government's resolution.

Earlier in August, Germany put together a plan to upgrade technology at its schools. There are plans to provide every teacher with a service laptop, and every pupil with cheap access to the Internet at a maximum cost of €10 per month.
