Celebrating the 40th Berlin CSD: Moments of pride across Germany

Through rain or shine, gay pride in Germany is always guaranteed to pull in a big crowd. As Berlin gets ready to stage its 40th Christopher Street Day (CSD) demonstration on Saturday, The Local looked back at how Germany has marked pride in recent years.

If you attended the CSD march in Berlin last year you'll know it was wet. Very wet. But guess what? A lot of rain as well as dramatic thunder and lightning storms didn't stop a lot of people from partying while also making a political stand. The motto was: 'More of us, every vote against the right.' This picture, as well as the first picture in the article, was taken in Berlin during CSD on July 22nd, 2017.

It’s fair to say many people go all out when it comes to their costumes for marking pride in Germany. In this picture, taken in Frankfurt am Main at the CSD on July 17th, 2004, this group had their entire bodies painted in colourful hues. We're into it.

Face paint is a great option – if the weather stays dry. This photo from July 16th, 2011 shows some wonderful face artwork on show at the CSD parade held in Rostock in northern Germany.

Illustrating the sheer number of people who attend CSD demos (half-a-million went to CSD in Berlin last year), we couldn't overlook this wonderful photograph taken on June 27th, 2015 with the Brandenburg Gate as a backdrop.

If you've got it flaunt it...during a parade through the Stuttgart city centre in 2004, we were attracted to this photo which captures some people's efforts - and we love this participant's glowing smile.

Showing suitable attitude, this pair were out to demonstrate for LGBT rights at the CSD parade wearing body armour. The demo was held on July 21st, 2001 in Frankfurt am Main.

This one made us all gooey-eyed. Under the motto: 'Rainbow of the sexes - we are all valuable', demonstrators took to the streets in Munich at the CSD on July 19th, 2014, with many holding up posters like this very sweet homemade one.
