Frankfurt area S-Bahn transit was disrupted on Friday for thousands of travelers after an empty high-speed train hit a railway buffer stop, causing it to derail.

It was a dramatic crash, but luckily one with no human casualties. The train was travelling with no passengers late in the early hours of Friday in the Griesheim area of Frankfurt when it collided with a railway buffer stop and derailed partially onto a station platform.

A railway spokesperson said on Friday that no one was injured, and even the driver remained unscathed.

The reason for the crash still remained unclear as of about 11am. The cost of the damage has also not yet been estimated.

Before noon, the part of the train that was still on the tracks was able to be removed.

But the portion of the train on the platform proved difficult to handle, and two special cranes from Fulda have been called in.

Some 6,000 travelers were impacted while the route on which the crash occurred was blocked off. Morning commuters had to take trams and buses instead, though regional and long-distance trains were not impacted.
