A group of horses had seemingly escaped from an enclosure in the Siegerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Dortmund police reported.
Initial investigations indicated that a herd of wild boar had broken down the fence of the horses’ enclosure and startled them.
The horses ran in the direction of the Autobahn A45, where a 45-year-old man from Cologne was driving. Die Welt reported that because it was still early in the morning and dark, the man may have not seen the horses.
The herd of horses collided with the man’s car and the man suffered fatal injuries due to the force of the impact. The front of the car was completely destroyed, according to police.
The driver died at the scene, along with three of the horses.
A second driver had to be treated for shock at the sight of the accident.
The collision also blocked traffic for about 15 kilometres in the morning.
