When two men in police uniforms showed up at a 50th birthday party, the guests were thrilled that the 'strippers' had arrived.

The only problem? The men weren't adult entertainers, but actual police officers, who had been called to the house to investigate a noise complaint.

The mix-up took place in Bendorf in Rheinland-Pfalz, south-western Germany, where about ten woman were celebrating a friend's birthday on Sunday night. They were delighted at the arrival of the presumed strippers, embracing and taking photos of the men in uniform.

The two officers, one in his 20's and one in his 50's, made "several attempts" to explain that it was a genuine police visit, according to a police statement - however, these were "totally unsuccessful".

When one of the men requested the birthday girl's phone number - following standard police procedure - the partygoers' excitement was "immeasurable", the statement reported.

It was only when one of the guests spotted the police car parked outside that they realized their mistake.

Once the mix-up was resolved, the music was turned down and the party continued in a more subdued fashion. The officers took the mistake in good humour and wished the host a happy birthday.
