A fight between two passengers and a taxi driver in Munich turned violent on Sunday, leaving the driver gravely injured.

The conflict broke out at about 3am on Sunday while the taxi driver was parked at a curb, police reported.

When the driver got out of the cab, the men reportedly pushed him and then hit him with a "forceful punch" so hard that he fell to the ground. The man then suffered many kicks to the head that left him unconscious.

The two men fled before police arrived and the driver was taken into intensive care at a hospital. The man is reported to be in near-death condition, and thus the homicide unit is investigating the case, police reported.

It is still not clear what led to the dispute.

Police said the two men are between the ages of 20 and 30 with dark hair and athletic figures.
