As soon as the temperature reaches 20 degrees, Germans are eager to get out of the city and into die Natur, with clothes or without.

Germany had one of the highest numbers of 'excellent'-rated lakes and rivers in the European Environment Agency's (EEA) annual bathing water report with 92.2 percent of lakes and rivers given the top-notch rating.

Though German beaches were not ranked as highly as its inland water bodies - less than 80 percent of beaches were 'excellent' - the majority, or 97.8 percent, met basic standards for water quality.

The EEA said that throughout the EU, water quality was very high, with 95 percent of monitored bathing sites meeting minimum standards and 83 percent rated 'excellent' for water quality.

Less than 2 percent overall were rated as not meeting minimum water quality standards.

"Good bathing water quality is critically important for Europeans. It plays a large role in helping people to plan holidays and leisure activities," the report said.

"It is therefore also of great importance to Europe's tourism industry, as clean and safe water is a major factor in continuing to attract visitors from all over the world."

To help you narrow your own swimming destinations, The Local compiled ten of the most stunning beaches and lakes that you might not believe are in Germany.
