Swedish police are checking a suspicious package apparently sent from Germany to a local newspaper in Sweden that previously published controversial Muhammad cartoons.

The delivery, which appears to have been sent from Germany to the newspaper Nerikes Allehande, contained a 'hard object', local media in Örebro, central Sweden, reported on Wednesday afternoon.

Newspaper director Katrin Säfström said that the police had sealed off the area and were awaiting the arrival of a bomb squad from Stockholm, which was expected to arrive by 4 pm.

"We are working as normal and as if this were happening at another newspaper, concentrating on reporting the story" Ola Karlsson, a reporter at the paper told The Local just after 3pm.

Police in Germany have also been informed about the parcel, it was reported.
