Boko Haram's leader Abubakar Shekau claimed in a new video obtained by AFP on Friday to be holding a German national, who was kidnapped in northern Nigerian earlier this year.

Shekau's claim that they were "holding your German hostage" is the first claim of responsibility for the abduction, which happened in Gombi, about 100 kilometres from the Adamawa state capital, Yola, on July 16th.

The German foreign ministry in Berlin said it did not want to comment when contacted by AFP.

Meanwhile another German national who was kidnapped by gunmen last Friday in southwest Nigeria has been released, police said on Thursday.

Ogun state police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi said the hostage was "rescued" on Thursday, but the security services have previously claimed successful rescue operations even when ransoms were paid.

The company the kidnapped man works for, construction firm Julius Berger, provided no details on the release but said that the employee was kidnapped on October 24th in an attack which left another German national dead.
