A down-on-his-luck gambler in western Germany has been saved from prison by a slot machine when it paid out as he was about to be arrested.

Two officers were carrying out routine checks at an arcade in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia, late last week when they found a man playing a slot machine who was wanted under an arrest warrant.

Police said on Thursday that the 37-year-old was ordered to pay a €710 fine or face up to 71 days in prison for previously resisting arrest.

Police told the man from Bochum he faced arrest but as they were talking to him the one-armed bandit started to light up. “The face of the Bochum man also started beaming all of a sudden,” police said.

The 37-year-old had won a €1,000 jackpot.

The man used his winnings to pay his fine on the spot in coins, and was spared arrest and prison.

“This happened in Bochum, not Las Vegas,” police added.
