Shoppers in a northern German city were stunned to see pornographic images on display in a shop window under the slogan: “Your home can do more. We'll show you how it's done.”

The pornographic photos appeared on the high street in the north German city of Bremerhaven on Thursday evening.

The looped images were beamed out on screens in the window of the customer centre for regional public utilities company swb for over two-and-a-half hours before anyone intervened.

The joke was already doing the rounds on social media by the time the public works company realized they had been hacked - after seeing the story in local media.

Finally staff managed to pull the plug and cut the screen's power supply.

“We don't think this is at all funny,” spokeswoman Angela Hünig told press agency DPA. “We're taking it very seriously.”

But Hünig was reportedly unable to suppress a smile at the positioning of the screened photos just under the advertising slogan: "We'll show you how it's done."

It's not yet known who was responsible hacking the screen, which usually displays an advertising film.

IT specialists are currently trying to identify weaknesses in the system.

Experts believe that after the centre closed, a remote connection or a smartphone was used to connect to the screen via the internet and open a browser window displaying the porn.

“You don't need any real IT knowledge to do something like this,” said Hünig. “But you do need to know how the system is set up.”
